Being Bilingual is such an amazing skill that allows one to connect with many different people, cultures, and ideas. Like any great skill, there are drawbacks of being bilingual. Many people associate langue with race, socioeconomic status, and intelligence. In this week’s literature I noticed two separate works that go in detail about what it is like to be bilingual. In “How to Tame a Wild Tongue“, Gloria Anzaldua undergoes a lot of negative interaction when it involves her second language. She is told that her language is ugly and something that did not belong in public. Her parents wanting her to fit in, told her that intelligent women shouldn’t talk with an accent. While Anzaldua tried to focus on the positives she found in speaking a second language, the negativity did take a toll. Unfortunately these attitudes are still around today. When Listening the Snow tha Products song, Bilingüe, I notice she too sticks up for the second language she speaks. Snow goes into detail about how she is proud to speak Spanish. She elaborates how it makes her different in a good way and that she refuses to let the negativity bring her down. Overall, I think we should embrace each other’s skills and try to learn from them instead of treating them negatively.
